Asen Georgiev was a Bulgarian lawyer and diplomat who confessedto working for the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) between 1957 and 1963.In a show trial staged in 1963 in Sofia Bulgaria, prosecutors alleged that hehad been paid nearly $200,000 for his services and accused him ofundermining the interests of the entire socialist camp by handing over Sovietsecrets to the Americans. This article offers a comprehensivede novoanalysisof the Georgiev case based on the extensive records of the Bulgarian StateSecurity Service and individual declassified CIA documents. This studydemonstrates that Georgiev’s intelligence about Nikita Khrushchev was crucialfor calling the Sino–Soviet split in 1960 and raises the possibility that heplayed unacknowledged roles in other international crises in 1961 and 1962.
